Funding of electromobility in Sweden

Landkarte Schweden
Sweden has a high share of electric cars. They account for a full 20 % of the total market. An important goal of the government is to become carbon neutral by 2045. To achieve this goal, this share must be further expanded. Numerous measures have been launched for this purpose. Most work by the principle of ‘bonus-malus’ which means that ‘bad’ behavior will be sanctioned and ‘good’ behavior will be rewarded.

Charging subsidies

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, the Swedish government launched the ‘Klimatklivet’ programme. This programme is characterised as an investment incentive for local or regional projects. It includes funding for the charging infrastructure and its grant covers 50 % of the investment of charging stations by different organizations, companies, municipalities foundations or associations. The programme was created for business and public associations. Grants are provided four times per year. To support individuals, the ‘charge at home’ programme was set up. Individuals receive up to 50 % or 10.000 SEK to purchase a charging station.

Electric car subsidies

Private and company customers can receive up to 60.000 SEK for the purchase of electric vehicles. The funding has to be a maximum of 25 % of the cars’ price.

Tax reduction

For private customers there is currently no tax bonus available. Company customers on the other hand can benefit from a 40 % discount on the company car tax. This discount is available to electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Eco vehicle tax

Everyone who buys a gasoline or diesel vehicle must consider increased taxation, a quasi penalty tax, in the first three years after purchase.

Local incentives

Mans swedish regions or cities offer free parking to electric cars, which often saves a lot of money. Especially in bigger cities. Moreover, e-cars are sometimes allowed to use bus lanes. Please have a look at regional or local websites for further and more specific information regarding the various incentives.
