Funding of electromobility in Denmark

Landkarte Dänemark

In comparison to its Scandinavian neighbours, Denmark was behind in electric vehicle sales for a long period of time. But the government is doing much now to change this situation. In 2019, a new climate law came into force. And since then, the electric vehicle market share grew from 0.4 % in 2017 to 4 % in 2019 – and this trend is growing. This development can be traced back to the multifaceted measures taken by the Danish state. Check out our overview.

Charging incentives

Denmark offers an exemption on the tax for commercial charging. As a result every company, which offers commercial charging, receives 1 DKK per kilowatt-hour discount on the electricity tax. Additionally, particularly favourable tariffs for charging electric buses are currently in effect and will remain so until 2024.

Tax benefits

Registration tax : There used to be a registration tax exemption for electric vehicles in Denmark until 2020. Starting from 2020, the government launched a new programme so owners do only pay certain amounts of taxes: 20 % of the full tax in 2020, 65 % in 2021, 90 % in 2022 and 100% in 2023. As a condition, this applies to cars below 400.000 DKK value.

Ownership tax : Denmark’s circulation taxes are based on fuel consumption and weight of the respective car. As a result, electric vehicles only pay the minimum amount. Even plug-in hybrids pay less than gasoline or diesel cars.

Parking benefits

Electric cars are exempt from the often high parking fees in Denmark up to 5.000 DKK per year. This makes every city trip by (electric) car much cheaper.

Public subsidies

In 2013, a programme was founded by the Danish Energy Agency in order to fund the purchase of an electric car for municipalities and companies.
